Usually, when a person hears of a “Jamaican Vacation”, a few things come to mind like: The North or South Coast and miles of white Sand Beaches. Nobody thinks about the Island’s capital Kingston as a potential Vacation Spot. If you are not too familiar with this parish, Kingston is the city capital of Jamaica. The population is 2,790,427 and this is the central point of almost everything in Jamaica, it is essentially where “the magic happens”. Jobs are created here; it features High Rise buildings, there are numerous housing developments and of course it is one of the liveliest places in Jamaica! Today, I will be taking you on a quick guide like no other of Kingston.
Where to Fly Into
Kingston’s main airport is the Norman Manley International Airport. This airport has been upgraded and offers flights all over the U.S, U.K and Asia. Once you land here you can opt for a bus or taxi to take you to your Hotel or you can always rent a car from Island Car Rental. The drive from the Airport to the Hotel is approximately 30 minutes. The best Hotels in Kingston are located in New Kingston. As the name suggests, this is the more commercialized part of Kingston that has the highest and best buildings, the best restaurants and so much more.

Other Things to Do in Kingston
While in New Kingston, the Emancipation Park is one of the places you must visit. The Park itself is a standard park with a jogging trail, seats, a fountain and a section for events. However, at the entrance of the park is the statue of Independence which features two Jamaican Slaves. This is a bit of a controversial statue because of what it represents and what the Statues are wearing (or lack thereof). About 10- 15 minutes from New Kingston is Devon House, this is the perfect place for good old Fashion Jamaican Ice Cream and everybody’s favourite, Beef patties. While at Devon House, check out the stores like Reve Jewellery & Accessories and Things Jamaican that offers handmade one of a kind Jamaican Trinkets.
The Food of Jamaica
One cannot come to Kingston and not indulge in some real Jamaican Food! If you are on diet, consider your Kingston Vacation as a cheat. Jamaica is famous for Jerk Chicken and on a Friday or Saturday Night; you will notice Jerk Pans on almost every street corner! Apart from Jerk Chicken you will also want to try Jerk Pork and the latest addition, Jerk Rabbit. Enjoy this with roast yam, sweet potato and of course the Hot Sauce! Another favourite is the Seafood; get delectable dishes like Fried/Steamed Fish, Curried Shrimp/ Lobster, Fish Tea, Conch Soup and so much more. The best places to get these wonderful dishes are Enblock Sports Bar and Grill and Whitebones Seafood.
It is important to take into consideration that Hotels in Kingston are Not All Inclusive. While there might be specials at specific times throughout the year, guests will be responsible for their own meals. Kingston is also a Hot Spot for Night life activities, there is a party happening somewhere every night. The best part is, there is no discrimination, as long as you have the cover fee, you are free to party the entire night.
